Gujarat marks a transformative progress in the tourism sector, and stands out as an iconic destination in recent years. Right from vibrant festivals to historical and archeological spots and cultural destinations, Gujarat, located at the western part of India, entices tourists from all over the country as well as across the globe. The second week October 2024 Gujarat celebrated Vikas Saptah, to mark the 23 years of incredible parade towards progress of the state’s tourism. This constructive escalation of Gujarat has succeeded under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the iconic ‘Khushboo Gujarat Ki’ campaign in 2005 to boost the state’s tourism sector. Through strategic promotion of key attractions and significant investments in infrastructure, Gujarat experienced a substantial increase in both domestic and international tourism. Major festivals such as the Rann Utsav, Navratri, and the Tarnetar Fair gained nationwide prominence, establishing Gujarat as a dynamic cultural hub.

The Remarkable Rise of Gir’s Prominence

Gujarat boasts a diverse array of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, with Gir National Park standing out as the only natural habitat of the majestic Asiatic lions. This park, one of Gujarat’s most prominent attractions, holds the distinction of being the exclusive home to these lions. During his tenure as Chief Minister, PM Modi placed significant emphasis on wildlife conservation, playing a pivotal role in preserving this rare ecosystem. His administration introduced stringent anti-poaching laws and improved park infrastructure, transforming Gir into a leading destination for ecotourism and wildlife enthusiasts. The ‘Khushboo Gujarat Ki’ campaign further enhanced the park’s visibility, attracting tourists from across India and around the world. Today, Gir’s thriving lion population and vibrant ecosystem make it the top destination for lion safaris, providing visitors with unforgettable experiences amidst the beauty of nature.

Tourists visiting Gir have consistently praised the park’s security measures and facilities. The guide and bus driver provide excellent information throughout the safari expedition both in Gir as well as in Devaliya.

Gujarat’s other Pillars of Pride

Gujarat’s natural beauty extends beyond wildlife conservation, with ecotourism destinations such as Saputara and Gira Waterfalls drawing nature lovers to their scenic landscapes and outdoor activities. The state’s cultural heritage is equally captivating, featuring historic forts, intricately designed stepwells, and ancient temples, which further enhance its tourism appeal.

The Kutch region was previously undervalued by many, but today Dhordo is acknowledged as one of the top tourist villages. The Rann Utsav, on the other hand, also has gained global recognition, adding to the vibrancy of Gujarat’s cultural events. Consequently, lakhs of tourists flock to Rann every year.

In Ahmedabad, the development of the Sabarmati Riverfront and the introduction of the ‘Akshar River Cruise’ offer unique experiences along the picturesque river. Another key landmark, the Statue of Unity - the world’s tallest statue—was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi as a symbol of national pride, attracting visitors from across the globe.

Tourists visiting the Statue of Unity have lauded Gujarat’s rapid tourism growth. “The state welcomes everyone to experience its rich cultural and historical treasures,” remarked one visitor. Another expressed admiration for the site’s cleanliness and serene environment, describing the visit as “a truly moving experience.”

According to the Union Tourism Ministry, Gujarat witnessed a remarkable 58 percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, with 28.06 lakh visitors compared to 17.77 lakh in 2022. This impressive growth positions Gujarat as the second-highest state for foreign tourist arrivals, following Maharashtra.
