Gir National Park occupies a significant spot on the wildlife tourism map of India. Just a four-hour drive from the coastal city of Porbandar, Gir makes for an ideal weekend getaway. It offers a unique opportunity to witness rare and fascinating Asiatic Lions, the primary attraction of Gir, along with other fauna species. A weekend trip to Gir National Park is not just about wildlife; it’s an immersive experience connecting visitors to Gujarat's natural and cultural heritage. Encountering wilderness in Gir National Park is a commendable break from the coastal hustle of Porbandar. A weekend tour at Gir is sure to rejuvenate your soul. This blog outlines a detailed plan for exploring the park and nearby attractions, helping you make the most of your weekend escapade.
Day 1: Journey from Porbandar to Gir and Evening Safari
Start your weekend adventure early on Saturday morning, leaving Porbandar around 6:00 AM. The road trip to Gir National Park is a pleasant journey of approximately 184 km, taking around three hours by car. Make a brief stop along the way for breakfast at a roadside dhaba to enjoy some authentic Gujarati snacks like dhokla or fafda with tea. Upon reaching the park by mid-morning, head straight to the Sasan Gir Visitor Centre to purchase your entry and safari tickets. Opting for the late afternoon safari, which begins around 3:00 pm or 4:00 PM, allows you to settle in and explore Gir's surroundings before the main adventure begins.
Gir is divided into various zones, and each safari takes visitors through a designated area. With a trained guide and driver accompanying you, you’ll traverse through rugged tracks lined with teak and acacia trees. Keep your eyes peeled for the iconic Asiatic lions lounging in the shade or patrolling their territory. You may also spot other animals like spotted deer, jackals, and peacocks during your ride.
As the sun sets, enjoy a traditional Gujarati thali at a local restaurant and rest for the night near the park, after the Gir jeep safari.
Day 2: Morning Safari and Return Journey
Begin your Sunday early to embark on the morning safari, which starts at sunrise, at around 6:00 am. The crisp morning air and the golden hues of the forest create a picturesque setting for your adventure. The 3-hour morning safari could lead you to spot various animals as well as birds. After the safari ends by 10:00 am, you can go for exploring the Interpretation Zone at Devalia too, a special area designed to offer a glimpse into the park’s wildlife through a shorter, controlled safari experience. It’s a great spot for families and those short on time, and the best alternative to Gir jeep safari. The Devaliya Safari operates in 4 slots of 1 hour each in the morning and 3 slots of 1 hour each in the evening. Devaliya Safari, too, requires advance booking of seats to explore the Interpretation Zone.
By mid-morning, begin your return journey to Porbandar. On the way back, consider a detour to visit the Somnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located about 58 km from Gir. The temple’s stunning architecture and spiritual significance make it a worthwhile stop.
